Why We Built QuarterMates

Every skipper knows the drill. Race day is tomorrow. You fire off a message to the crew WhatsApp at 8pm: "Who's in for Sunday?" By midnight you have three reacts, two thumbs-ups, and one person who is "maybe, depends on the weather." Yannick is definitely coming. Or is it Jannick? There are two Jannicks.

That chaos is why QuarterMates exists.

The Last Straw

It was an Ijspegel race out of Scheveningen. Seven crew confirmed. Two didn't show. One had the wrong Sunday. One had quietly unconfirmed with a thumbs-down emoji that nobody spotted, buried under forty messages about someone's new foulies.

We sailed shorthanded and finished last. Not heroically last. Just last.

Post-race, over bitterballen in the clubhouse, the question formed: why is this still so hard? We can order groceries to a moving train, but we cannot reliably figure out who's standing on the boat on Sunday.

Somebody grabbed a beer coaster and started sketching. What if confirming was one tap? What if the skipper could just see, at a glance, who's in, who's out, and who's hiding behind a maybe?

Sailors First, Developers Second

We race every week, which means we know the constraints. People check their phones on the pontoon with wet hands and one bar of signal, not at a desk with a coffee. The thing had to be fast, simple, and honest about what it does.

So we started with the two features that actually matter:

1. Crew confirmation. One tap. In, out, or maybe. The skipper sees it instantly, and a maybe actually looks different from silence.

2. Invite links. Share a link in any channel you like. Crew join in about 30 seconds. No forms, no friction, no "download this app and search for my boat."

Everything else grew from there.

Where This Is Going

We're in early beta. The core works. Next up: race scheduling, position rotation, and a skipper dashboard that tells you everything you need before the morning briefing, ideally before your first coffee has cooled.
